Study Overview
Icarus Medical understands the frustration of knee pain firsthand – we are inventors as well as patients – and we are determined to solve this problem! Our team is developing a new type of knee brace to help people stay active with less pain, and to safely return to their favorite activities.

Our prototype brace has demonstrated excellent preliminary results in relieving pain. The brace assists patients by reducing the weight experienced in the knee by generating a force that opposes the bending of the knee. The brace is custom fit, adjustable, and lightweight, making it suitable for a wide variety of patients and medical conditions.
Our target demographics are: active people who aim to delay knee surgery, the aging population who aim to prolong the life of a joint replacement, or postpone a joint replacement, and athletes who seek performance enhancement.

We encourage everyone ages 18 and up with knee problems to get involved with Icarus and become part of the solution. You will receiving a state-of-the-art, high-performance brace to keep that is valued at $2,000, and feel the benefit of contributing to science.

About the Study
If you are selected to participate, Icarus will contact you to better understand your injury, pain level, and needs, and will then fabricate a brace custom fit to your leg.
We will ask you to provide feedback on how you use the brace, and whether you have experienced a reduction in pain for different activities.
Feedback will be weekly for the first 3 months, and then monthly for the first year. You will be asked to do a series of small tests, such as squatting, walking up and down steps, and jumping (if able).

These tests will be conducted with and without the brace. The study will serve patients remotely within the U.S., although the Icarus team is based in Charlottesville, VA.
Who can participate?
Patients 18 or older with one or more of the following:
- Osteoarthritis / cartilage damage
- Meniscus damage
- ACL / MCL / PCL injuries
- Leg muscle atrophy
- Limited movement due to cerebral palsy (CP), multiple sclerosis (MS), and other disabilities
